Sidney Goddard Gregory, oldest son of Claiborn and Polly Gregory,
was born 1 April 1833 in the area of Big Sinking. His first
marriage to Nancy E. Gibson in 1852, ended in divorce. There
was one child born to this marriage, Leann Gregory (b. 1853).
No record of what became of Nancy and daughter Leann. In the
1860 census, mother and child were living with Nancy's parents,
Larkin and Elizabeth (Austin) Gibson. Sidney had served in the
same Civil War unit with Nancy's brother Frank Gibson. Frank
Gibson married Sidney's younger sister, Julie Gregory in 1852.
Sidney married second wife Sophronia Adeline Bell on 22 May 1860.
She was the daughter of Elizabeth Denny and the late William Bell.
Sophronia and Sidney had nine children, their oldest son, Will
Gregory was my paternal great-grandfather. Sophronia died in 1882,
three weeks after giving birth to their daughter Sophronia Jane.
Their children: William H. "Will", Clayborn, John F., Mary Elizabeth
(Gregory) Burk, Tranquilla "Trannie" (Gregory) Gregory, Sidney,
Artie Mince (Gregory) Burk, Matthew T., Sophronia Jane (Gregory) Vaughn.
I found an incomplete marriage application for Sidney Gregory and
his widowed cousin Usley Gregory Vaughn dated 22 December 1882.
The minister did not return his part of the application to the
county clerks office in Wayne County. It's difficult to say whether
the couple actually married or not. There is no copy of the 1890
census to verify if this couple lived together or how long. I
did not find any record of divorce. However, if Sidney did marry
Usley Vaughn, this might explain why daughter Sophronia Jane ended
up living with and marrying into the Vaughn family.
Sidney married his final wife Wayne Jane Vaughn on 17 December 1892.
Wayne was the daughter of Sallie Vaughn and Matthew Corder. Wayne
and Sidney had seven children. Their children: Pussemerine (Gregory) Bell,
Jefferson B., Leola (Gregory) Bell, James M., George W., Wolford L.,
and Marshall.
Sidney died on 28 March 1913 at his home near Rocky Branch, KY.
He is buried in the Grant Roberts Cemetery where several members of
his family are buried. I suspect that his late wife Sophronia Bell
may also be buried there. His wife Wayne Vaughn Gregory who died in
1951 is not buried in the same cemetery.
