Claiborn Hansberry Gregory, youngest child of Claiborn Gregory
and Polly Decker, was born 1 September 1846 in Wayne County, KY.
During the Civil War he enlisted in the Army at the age of 18.
He and his older brother Sidney served with the 30th Kentucky
Infantry, Company D and were mustered in at Camp Burnside at
Frankfort, KY. Claiborn mustered out of the Army on 1 November 1864.

On 13 December 1867 Claiborn married America Bell, the daughter
of Joseph Bell and Tamsey Denny. The young couple had four
children: Nancy Margaret, Manerva Jane, Joseph, and Lewis.
In the 1870 census, Claiborn's mother Mary (Decker) Gregory,
now a widow, is living with her youngest son and daughter-in-law.

Sometime after 1870, Claiborn's wife America died and he married
a second time to Nancy Slagle on 13 September 1878. Claiborn
and Nancy are my maternal great-grandparents. They had two
children, Russell (died as a child) and my grandfather Emberson.
Nancy Slagle is my "brickwall". I can only speculate as to who
her parents may be. A headstone was recently purchased for Nancy
Gregory by E & M Books.

Nancy Slagle Gregory died about 1885 and Claiborn married for a
third time to Samantha Margarette Bell. Samantha was the daughter
of Matilda Bell and the granddaughter of Thomas Bell and Sarah Troxell.
Claiborn and Samantha married 29 June 1887 and had twelve children
during their 38 years of marriage. Their children were: Dora,
John Obie, Druze, Amp, Wm McKinley, Stoney, Lou, Roxie, Maude,
Letha, Fletcher, and Ethel.

In June 1925, Claiborn suffered a stroke and died about a week later
on 25 June 1925. He is buried in the Grant Roberts Cemetery. His wife
Samantha passed away in 1952 and is buried beside him. More.....
